The spirits of your departed loved ones sometimes interact with our physical environment to show they’re still nearby. They might move around objects in our home, like keys, books, or small decorations, especially ones that had personal meaning when they were alive.
It’s not uncommon to have a cherished object go missing from its usual spot, only to find it later in the most unlikely of places.
This kind of spirit activity often happens when we’re thinking of them, or during emotionally significant moments, as a way of offering comfort or making their presence known. It’s never random. It’s a gentle reminder that their energy hasn’t gone far.
I was about 20 years old when I experienced an in-depth, private sitting with a wonderful spiritualist medium known to me as Nan Lightfoot. My father had heard of her through the local spiritualist church, and as it turned out, she was an elderly lady who lived just two blocks from our house.
A warm friendship soon blossomed between us. I would help her with shopping and running errands whenever I could, until I eventually left England for many years.
After bringing in her shopping and putting it away, Nan would make us a cup of coffee. During our many conversations, she would occasionally offer wise advice channeled from her spirit guides. Often, right in the middle of an ordinary discussion, she would suddenly shift from speaking English into broad Welsh. These moments of Welsh chatter signaled that Nan was now channeling a message from one of her ancestral guides.
When you start talking about apports, you will find a surprising number of people have had instances where things appeared in seemingly random places where there is no explanation for how they got there ~ Chris Cliff
She would lower her head and rattle off something in Welsh, then abruptly stop. Emerging from the trance-like state with a dazed expression, she’d gently roll her head back and forth before calmly relaying the English version of what her guide had just shared.
During one of the very first channeling sessions I experienced with Nan Lightfoot, she described a young spirit girl around me who said her name was “Lali.” Nan shared how the little girl pointed to a body of water and described her appearance in detail.
I instantly knew who she was referring to. The little girl had been a friend of mine when I was a youngster growing up in the Canary Islands. Like me, she was a very lonely child from a show business family. Lali sadly drowned on the beachfront on Christmas Day, just before we left the Islands, and Nan said she had since connected herself to me.
However, what came next blew me away. Nan Lightfoot then said, “Lali says she loves to play in your jewelry boxes.” I must admit, I had often wondered why they were always so messy inside. The items would be tangled and untidy, and being quite obsessive-compulsive about order and tidiness at that point in my life, the disarray didn’t make sense. Now it all did. But it didn’t bother me at all, as long as Lali was enjoying herself!
A few years later, it occurred to me that perhaps the shock of Lali’s drowning and her attachment to me were preventing her from moving on. So, I worked on encouraging her to move ahead and into the Light.
Apports once were a common phenomenon of spiritualist Séances, with mediums producing flowers, perfumes, and odd objects, said to be gifts from the spirits present ~ Lux Ferre
Apports Across Cultures & Spiritual Traditions
The fascinating phenomenon has long-standing cultural and spiritual significance across various traditions worldwide. In these belief systems, the sudden and unexplained appearance of physical objects is not merely a curiosity, but a meaningful even viewed as a direct form of communication from the spirit world.
These objects, often small and seemingly ordinary, are considered sacred gifts or symbolic messages. They serve to reassure the living of a loved one’s continued presence, mark a moment of spiritual awakening, or provide emotional closure. From ancestral offerings in indigenous rituals to relic manifestations in religious mysticism, these phenomena have long been revered as tangible expressions of the unseen, bridging the gap between the material world and the realms beyond.
In Shamanic traditions across the Americas, Siberia, and parts of Africa, objects like stones, animal remains, or herbs are known to manifest during rituals or healing sessions. These are interpreted as spirit gifts, meant to aid in healing, divination, or to carry messages from ancestral spirits or nature beings. In Afro-Caribbean spiritual systems like Santería or Vodou, objects may appear or be moved by spirits during ceremonies as part of offerings or signs from the orishas or ancestral spirits.
In Hinduism, accounts of holy ash (vibhuti), sacred objects, or even food offerings appearing during devotional rituals or in the presence of advanced yogis are seen as signs of divine intervention or blessings from deities. In Catholic mysticism, the appearance or spontaneous transfer of relics, rosaries, or saint-associated objects, sometimes during ecstatic visions or at pilgrimage sites, is considered miraculous. Such apports are revered as signs of divine presence or intercession.
In Spiritualism this phenomenon is known as an apport. The term “apportation” refers to the spirit phenomenon where objects appear, disappear, or move to a new location without any visible external influence. An object that appears or been transported in this manner is called an “apport.” Apports are therefore objects that materialize out of thin air, or are mysteriously moved from one place without being touched.
The term “apport” in spiritualism has its roots in the French word apporter, meaning “to bring.” One of the earliest recorded examples of an apport took place in 1819 during a séance witnessed by Dr. G. P. Billot. In the middle of the gathering, a dove unexpectedly flew around the room and dropped three slips of paper, each bearing the name of a saint: St. Maxime, St. Sabine, and Many Martyrs. The event was deemed so significant that it was documented and later published in 1839.
Apports gained popularity during the rise of spiritualism, especially in Victorian-era séances. Physical mediums produces objects like flowers, coins, or even live animals as proof of spirit presence and communication. Some of the famous mediums of the era, such as Daniel Dunglas Home and Eusapia Palladino, were known for spectacular physical mediumship demonstrations involving apports. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also wrote extensively about the phenomenon.
In recent years, the phenomenon of apports has largely fallen out of favor among spiritualists and is not as widely discussed or studied as it was in the past. However, it still remains a topic of interest among some researchers and paranormal enthusiasts ~ Steve Parker
Research On Apport Phenomena
While apports are often associated with Victorian séances and old-world mysticism, modern research reveals that this phenomenon continues to intrigue scientists, psychic researchers, and spiritual practitioners alike. In recent years, a number of carefully documented cases have emerged, confirming that apportation is not merely ancient folklore or trickery, as if often assumed.
From controlled séance experiments to spontaneous materializations observed under modern instrumentation, these contemporary accounts offer compelling evidence that the spirit world’s ability to influence matter is valid, albeit elusive.
Some of the most intriguing modern investigations into the phenomenon of apports include:
Amyr Amiden (1993 – 1994)
Renowned parapsychologist Stanley Krippner reported the intriguing case of Brazilian psychic medium Amyr Amiden. Known for his abilities to manifest apports, Amiden underwent a series of controlled investigations. During trance-like states, he was observed producing small items such as gemstones, jewelry, coins and medallions, often under strict observational protocols.
What made these sessions particularly compelling to researchers was not only the spontaneous materialization of objects, but also the environmental anomalies that accompanied them. Krippner and his team documented unusual fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field coinciding with several of the apport events. These geomagnetic shifts, although subtle, hinted at a possible link between changes in the electromagnetic environment and the facilitation of paranormal phenomena.
The Scole Experiments (1993 – 1998)
Conducted by David Fontana, Arthur Ellison, and Montague Keen in the UK, the Scole circle produced physical mediumship phenomena, including apports, direct voices, and object materializations. Researchers captured photographs, audio recordings, and claimed physical objects. Although controversial due to methodological criticisms, it remains one of the most documented modern séances featuring apports.
Herbert Baumann (1965 – 1985)
Herbert Baumann, a German physical medium who worked under the pseudonym “Jons Dave,” was closely studied by Illobrand von Ludwiger, a friend and firsthand witness to over 100 spirit apports. The apports were observed both during séances and in everyday life.
Many of the stones he apported had distinctive, unexplained internal crack networks that rendered them fragile and unlike any naturally occurring damage, puzzling jewelers and scientists alike. Analyses failed to replicate the unusual crack patterns or heat signatures of these objects under controlled conditions.
Baumann’s apports often coincided with trance states, poetic speech from spirit communicators, and a distinct heat felt upon their arrival. On occasion, objects would appear in sealed containers, float mid-air, or emerge from his body. Some were seemingly produced on demand or appeared following specific wishes from sitters.
Jack Hunter
Dr. Jack Hunter, an anthropologist who specializes in the study of the paranormal, studied modern mediumship for his Ph.D. His book Manifesting Spirits (2020) is a direct result of this research, focusing on a private spiritualist circle based in Bristol, UK.
Hunter, as an academic, uses careful and more detailed methods to study these events. This means his approach to documenting these phenomena is more advanced than what it used to be a hundred years ago. His research shows that physical mediumship, where spirit manifests real-world effects like knocking, moving objects, and apports, is still actively practiced in private séances and circles around the world. The phenomena are very similar to what sitters reported in the 1800s and early 1900s during the rise of spiritualism.
UPIDE Spontaneous Psychokinesis Case (2021 – 2022)
A compelling modern case of apports was investigated in Mexico City between 2021 and 2022. Researcher D’León Macías and the UPIDE group studied a married couple who reported the sudden appearance of coins, medals, dead flowers, and even apples in their home. This is a classic sign of the apport phenomenon, which was once common in 19th-century spiritualism.
The events were mostly linked to the husband but also occurred in the wife’s presence. To solve the mystery, researchers installed infrared cameras, conducted psychological and neurological evaluations, consulted with spiritual practitioners, and even documented real-time footage of coins materializing. The case is one of the few modern investigations that combines scientific research with spiritual understanding of spontaneous spirit phenomena.
What exactly apports are, no one can tell for sure. All that is known is that such objects are as real as any material object can be. Where they come from is harder to determine ~ Jaime Licauco
How Spirit Manifests Messages Through Matter
Much has been documented about apports as signs, gifts, or keepsakes from spirit. Shells, small trinkets, fossils, coins, feathers, flowers, and even items previously misplaced by the attending sitters would suddenly appear out of nowhere. These objects fall into several intriguing categories:
Natural Objects: Flowers, leaves, pebbles, crystals, feathers, and even small birds or insects may manifest as signs from the spirit realm. These offerings serve as gentle nudges from nature, imbued with spiritual significance.
Personal Items: These include jewelry, tokens, or other meaningful objects tied to a loved one who has passed. Their sudden reappearance is often a direct and touching message that their energy remains nearby.
Symbolic Objects: Some items carry a unique, often private meaning for the receiver. Although they may seem random or insignificant to others, they hold deep symbolic value for the person meant to find them. These objects can offer insight, confirmation, or emotional clarity.
Sacred / Ritual Objects: Apports sometimes take the form of spiritual or religious items such as prayer beads, crosses, or protective charms. These are often seen as signs of divine support or reassurance during moments of spiritual awakening or need.
Scent Apports (Clairolfaction): A sudden, unexplained fragrance, such as a specific flower, their favorite perfume, or even cigarette smoke, can arise without any physical source. These scents are often spirit’s signature or a way of letting their presence be known.
Taste Apports (Clairgustance): This rare type of apport involves an unexpected taste in the mouth, often related to a loved one’s favorite food or a shared memory. These taste impressions offer subtle comfort, connection, or emotional messages from beyond.
Although public séances featuring dramatic apparitions and apports are less common today, the core understanding of such spirit interactions remains both important and valid. In modern homes, the phenomenon of apports often manifests in more subtle ways. For example, one might find a long-lost item or discover a loved one’s gift in an unexpected place.
If you have experienced similar unexplained events at home, the concept of apports offers a meaningful framework. It affirms these occurrences as genuine spiritual activity and can provide comfort, a sense of connection, or even a glimpse into the continuation of consciousness beyond this life.
Apports, even when not experienced directly, remain a powerful symbol within spiritualism. They demonstrate the potential for spirit to influence matter and reflect the deep interconnectedness of all realms of existence.
Apport phenomena are not about dramatic displays, but rather the quiet, meaningful moments of interaction between the spiritual and physical worlds, often unfolding within the private, sacred space of one’s own home. They serve as reminders that reality is ever-shifting and that the spirit world is always near, gently shaping our lives in unseen ways.
